Newpark Resources & Core Lab Top EnergyPoint's 2020 Oilfield Services Customer Satisfaction Rankings


HOUSTON (August 12, 2020) – EnergyPoint Research announces results from its 2020 Oilfield Services Customer Satisfaction Survey. Newpark Resources, an independent provider of drilling fluids services and systems received the top rating in this year's survey. In addition to ranking first overall, the company registered survey-high marks in fluids services, drilling-related services, HSE, performance and reliability, service and professionalism, offshore applications, and five additional categories. 

Core Laboratories, the survey's top-rated company from 2015 through 2019, was this year's runner up. The company rated first in core and fluids analysis, formation and well evaluation, technology, job quality, onshore applications, Asia & Pacific Rim, Middle East and five additional categories. Liberty Oilfield Services took the third spot overall followed by CGG and RPC, each capturing the top spot in multiple categories.

Doug Sheridan, Managing Director and founder of EnergyPoint noted, “For more than 15 years, EnergyPoint's independent customer satisfaction surveys have demonstrated that upstream oil and gas suppliers with highly satisfied customer bases are more likely to outperform—in good times and in bad.” Sheridan added, “In today's environment, with the entire industry pushing to do more with less, customer satisfaction may prove the difference between surviving and not. As top suppliers continue to deliver, others will be left behind. Those are simply the facts.” 

The survey, which has been conducted annually since 2008, is one of several EnergyPoint studies focused on the oil and gas industry's satisfaction with the products and services it utilizes and depends upon. More than 50 major service suppliers were listed in this year's global survey. A total of 33 received the minimum number of evaluations to be included in this year's final top-to-bottom rankings. This year's is the largest oilfield services survey EnergyPoint has conducted to date.

 Listed alphabetically, companies rating first in at least one category include: 

  • Baker Hughes in perforating services;
  • Basic Energy Services in workovers and well services, as well as in water management services;
  • Bourbon Offshore in marine transportation and supply, platform supply vessels, and one additional category;
  • Calfrac Well Services in Canada;
  • CGG in digital oilfield and big data, geophysical services, onshore data acquisition, the Middle East, and three additional categories;
  • Core Laboratories in job quality, technology, formation and well evaluation, core and fluids analysis, onshore applications, international regions, Asia & Pacific Rim, Sub-Sahara Africa, and four additional categories;
  • Delmar Systems in Gulf of Mexico, as well as in special applications;
  • Frank's International in horizontal and directional wells, deepwater applications, HPHT applications, Western Europe, and three additional categories;
  • Halliburton in integrated services, sand control, well testing, onshore applications, Eastern Europe & FSU, Bakken-Dakotas, Ark-La-Tex, and several additional categories;
  • Intermoor in mooring services, ultra-deepwater applications, and one additional category;
  • Liberty Oilfield Services in hydraulic fracturing, digital oilfield and big data, Interior Texas & Mid-Continent, Onshore Gulf Coast, and two additional categories;
  • MRC Global in oilfield supply and distribution;
  • Nabors Industries in completion-related services, as well as in casing and tubing running;
  • Newpark Resources in total satisfaction, fluids services, drilling-related services, HSE, performance and reliability, service and professionalism, offshore applications, and five additional survey categories; 
  • Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) in library sales and multi-client sales studies, offshore data acquisition, and one additional category;
  • RPC in Appalachian Basin – Marcellus, as well as in the U.S. Rockies;
  • Schlumberger in technology, measurement-while-drilling (MWD), wireline logging, logging-while-drilling (LWD), cementing services, Latin America & Mexico, California, Alaska, ultra-deepwater applications, fishing services, special applications, and several additional categories;
  • Scientific Drilling in directional drilling;
  • Superior Energy Services in plug and abandonment, and;
  • Tidewater in AHTS vessels, and fast supply vessels, and one additional category.

Other providers of oilfield services receiving the minimum number of evaluations to be included in this year's final rankings include, in alphabetical order, Archer, BJ Services, C&J Energy Services, DistributionNOW, Expro, FTS International, Key Energy Services, Mammoth Energy Services, Nine Energy Service, ProPetro, Sanjel, TETRA Technologies and Weatherford International.  

“The global petroleum industry may be on its heels, but it remains immense. And despite the move toward decarbonization, both the developed and developing world will continue to need oil and gas for decades to come,” emphasized Sheridan. “In the end, the smart suppliers will capitalize by focusing on what they do best—and then figuring out how to do it even better. It's unmistakably a new day in the oilfield, one that demands a more precise and customer-centric mindset.” 

Survey Information

The survey, which was global in nature and included more than 40 questions, was concluded on December 31, 2019. Survey questions focused on features and attributes shown to drive satisfaction among customers of oilfield service suppliers. These include pricing and contract terms, performance and reliability, job quality, safety and environmental, service and professionalism, technology, digital oilfield and big data, and corporate capabilities. Respondents also evaluated companies across multiple service categories, applications and well types. Survey respondents were asked to rate only those suppliers with which they have had significant experience as customers within the last 24 months. 

The survey's results reflect the opinions of customers via more than 3,500 evaluations of oilfield service providers globally. For categories and companies in which qualifying ratings exist, scores from EnergyPoint's 2017 and 2018 surveys were included in category‑winner calculations at lesser weightings than 2019 and 2020 evaluations. In no case were 2017 and 2018 evaluations assigned a weighting of more than 20 percent for purposes of calculating final 2020 ratings.

Detailed survey results are included in EnergyPoint's soon-to-be-released 2020 Oilfield Services Ratings & Analysis Report. The report includes ratings from the survey for all 33 companies, with analysis of trends and drivers of customer satisfaction as revealed by survey results.
