Secondary Inert Shielding Gas Application with Weld Trailing Shields

A secondary inert shielding gas application is often required when welding reactive metals such as titanium alloys and stainless steels, to protect the weld from oxidation until it has cooled to a safe temperature.

The low cost Argweld® Weld Trailing Shield® provides additional inert gas coverage during welding and is available from Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® in flat and radiused versions.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “Our Trailing Shields® simply attach onto any TIG/GTAW, PAW/Plasma and MIG/GMAW welding torch, ensuring that the weld stays under a protective inert gas coverage while the hot weld metal is cooling, preventing it from oxidising on contact with air.”

The Trailing Shield® is connected to the inert gas supply, diffusing gas without turbulence through multi layers of stainless steel mesh built into the body of the shield. At each side, replaceable silicone rubber side shields provide a barrier to prevent the gas escaping sideways. As the welding torch is moved forward, the weld remains under an inert gas shield until the welded metal has cooled below its oxidation temperature.

Trailing Shields® are reusable, with a temperature resistance of up to 230ºC. They prevent re-work, eliminate the need for an expensive purge chamber and allow for faster welding.

For manual welding, the welder finds that with this lightweight and low cost tool, there is no difficulty in dragging it along the surface being welded. One further benefit is that it carries the welding torch at 90º to the weld.

Radiused Shields are designed to suit the exact diameter of the pipe or vessels being welded. Flat models are available for sheet and plate welding.

Marketing and Social Media Manager for HFT®, Michaela Reay adds: “We were delighted when our Trailing Shield was recently featured on WeldTube's Titanium Welding Video. To see our Trailing Shield in action, visit WeldTube's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haRjD55eqGI&t=839s

Oxygen Monitor for Welding

Inert gas welding requires the elimination of oxygen from the weld zone during the welding of reactive metals including stainless steel. Before the welding process begins, the oxygen level must be reduced to a required minimum, which is less than 100 ppm when welding stainless steel.  The low cos ...

Low Cost Weld Purge Plugs for Tube and Pipe Weld Purging

Due to tight budgets, welders sometimes have to construct their own Weld Purging Equipment, often made from materials such as paper, card, sponge or foam. Homemade dams made from such materials can often lead to loss of welds when they leak or slip from position thus flooding the welding zone with ...

Increase the life of your Tungsten Electrode with MultiStrike®

Thoriated tungsten electrodes are still widely used in GTAW/TIG welding despite the potential health hazards. Thoria is added primarily to stabilize the arc but it is radio-toxic and radio-toxic dust is generated during electrode grinding. To overcome the risk posed by harmful products Huntingdon ...
